Architecture 101: 72 Poplar
72 Poplar, per the BHB
One of the advantages of working in historic and landmark districts is that many of the properties within them have storied architectural pasts. 72 Poplar, for instance, is the former Police Precinct Station House, according to the AIA Guide to New York City (the newest edition will be out in a couple of months). The style is Florentine–they call it a “police palazzo”–characterized in part by the very heavy cornice you can see hanging over the top, and the hierarchical windows.
In April of last year, the Brooklyn Heights Blog posted a rendering of one developer’s dream for the site, to attach a modern addition and create luxury condos. Clearly, that hasn’t happened, and the site continues to sit vacant, but full of potential. What do you think of the building–in its current state, and as we’ve imagined it?
